The range-topping ute has been rumored for years and was close to being greenlit three years ago, though Munich pushed the model back due to an economic slowdown. Kia s luxury offerings may end up being rolled into the Genesis brand, and that s probably a better place for them. But the idea that Hyundai/Kia can t or shouldn t build cars like the K900 is weird. If Kia sells a handful of them, and the brass thinks that the cost of having a slow-seller on dealer lots is outweighed by the good it does for the Kia brand, that s fine. If it s ultimately a failed experiment, that s fine too. I m not a Hyundai shareholder. And regardless, Kia s not selling fewer Souls because they offer the K900 and the K900 won t be the difference between profit and loss this year. Some of the coolest, most interesting cars ever built were sales flops. That s the way it goes. I loved the VW Phaeton and so did most of the people who set aside their brand-snob impulses and bought one. But, if VW had been able to see into the future, the Phaeton might never have existed. Honda Gold Wing The 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder takes a second to get going as the dual-clutch automatic engages, but then it gets going with 201 horses pulling it along. It surges a little bit in the mid range. I'm not sure if the transmission programming on our car was a little wonky or that's just how it is, but it gets annoying. Like most dual-clutch transmissions, it's also annoying when trying to creep along. The clutch keeps engaging, and then you have to hit the brake to avoid hitting the parked car in front of you. It's way more noticeable when you're trying to keep a sleeping baby sleeping. Sport mode quickens everything -- the creeping and the shifting -- but doesn't take away all the jerkiness. The steering has good weight to it. It doesn't seem like you need too much input to hit apexes, and overall, the Veloster is sprung stiffly, probably stiffer than the Golf GTI or Focus ST. In my younger days, also known as "a few weeks ago" it would have been sprung just right. Now it feels a little harsh, with bigger cracks and bumps echoing loudly into the cabin, especially when on the throttle. That doesn't help the rattling interior either. On the bright side, it stays mostly flat in corners, no matter how many Gs you throw at it. So, the Veloster Turbo looks unique, it's quick, handles well, but it plays in probably the toughest segment in the market. The GTI is so damn refined now it's almost less impressive than it once was. It's not a fun, compromise car; it's just a great car. Same for the Focus ST. It's quick -- quicker than the Veloster or GTI in fact, and feels extremely composed at the limit. Both come in with a $25K or so base price. The base Veloster Turbo is a little cheaper, but this one is optioned up to $27,450 with the $2,700 tech package.
